Binding

The type of binding is usually selected based on the function of the product, technical specification and budget.

  Sewn binding

Sewn binding

A strong, durable binding where inside pages are sewn together in sections. Standard thread colour is white, but you can order different colour threads.

  Glued binding

Glued binding

Also known as Perfect binding. Content pages are bound together by a layer of flexible adhesive. Quite durable and has a low to medium cost.

  PURglued

PUR-glued

Content pages are glued with PUR glue, which offers superior adhesion. Using smaller amounts of adhesive, it is more durable than hotmelt binding. Once the glue is set, it is almost impossible to tear a page out.

  Layflat binding

Lay-flat binding

Sewn soft cover books with endpapers, for which the cover spine is not attached to the book content spine part. This makes it possible for you to lay it flat when it is opened. This also gives the cover spine an appearance similar to hard cover books. When the book is opened, the cover does not crease in the direction of the spine.

  Spiral

Spiral

Soft cover or hard cover books bound with spiral coil can open flat and offer 360-degree rotation. Spiral coils are available in different colours and sizes. Best results with products not thinner than 6mm and not thicker than 24mm.

  Wireo

Wire-o

Punched pages are inserted onto a C-shaped wire spine, which is squeezed until it is round. Like spiral binding it can open flat, it offers 360-degree rotation and wires are available in different colours and sizes. Best results with soft or hard cover books not thinner than 2mm and not thicker than 24mm.

  Saddlestitched

Saddle-stitched

Most economical type of binding. Content pages and cover are stitched together with a metal wire, which is folded in the inside of the brochure and looks like a staple. 2 stitches is standard, but possible with more if requested.

   Soft cover

Soft cover

Also known as Paperback, with either a thick paper or cardboard cover.

Minimum size for glued or sewn soft cover books: 70x82 mm
Minimum size for glued or sewn soft cover books with flaps: 100x82

Maximum size for glued or sewn soft cover books: 300x430

  Cover with flaps

Cover with flaps

Usually with flaps on front and back covers, but also possible with just one flap or double-flaps. Mostly common for soft cover books, saddle-stitched brochures and flexi bound books.

  Hard cover

Hard cover

Also known as Hardback, where cover paper or other cover material is glued onto a thick board. This gives the book protection and durability.

Maximum size for glued or sewn hard cover books with round spine: 290x380 mm
Maximum size for glued or sewn hard cover books with flat spine: 300x380 mm

Minimum size for glued or sewn hard cover books: 70x100 mm

  Flexi cover

Flexi cover

Binding style which lies between paperback and hard cover binding, combining features of both. More durable than soft covers, lighter than hard covers. Endpapers, head & tail bands and marker ribbons also possible as for hard covers. Flaps for cover possible as for soft covers.

  Endpapers

Endpapers

If endpapers are not included in content pages as self-ends, endpaper is a folded sheet with one half glued onto the inside cover and the other serving as the first or last free page. Usually paper that is thicker or the same as content pages is used for endpapers. They can be printed or blank, or made from already coloured paper.

  Endpapers with flaps

Endpapers with flaps

Endpapers can have flaps on one or both sides.

  Jacket

Jacket

A detachable outer cover, usually made of paper and has folded flaps that hold it to the book covers.

  Rawcut

Raw-cut

A type of hard cover books, where the cover is cut flush with the book block exposing the board on either all three sides, just one or two of the sides.

  Quarter binding

Quarter binding

Traditionally for quarter bound books the cover spine material is different from the front and back cover material or paper. It is possible to vary the combinations of materials differently from the traditional style. For example, one material for the spine part and back cover, and a second material for the front cover.

  Round corners

Round corners

Rounded corners for soft cover books and for hard cover books. For hard cover books it is possible to have rounded corners for content pages or for the cover, or both.

   Round spine

Round spine

Content block should be at least 6mm thick to have a round spine. Please also note - the wider the spine, the less rounded the spine can be.

  Flat spine

Flat spine

If not specified differently, the same thickness is used for the board inside the flat spine as for the front and back covers.

  Open spine

Open spine

Also known as exposed spine binding. Coloured threads are often used with this style of spine.
